A long time has passed since the monumental event Dawn trail let go, and the Final fantasy 14 community looks to the future as Square Enix unveils patch 7.1 – a huge update with a ton of content while also tying up some loose ends in the expansion story.
This article contains mild story spoilers for Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail.
Patch 7.1, aptly named “Crossroads”, will be released sometime in November – and boy, is it a biggie. From brand new Hildebrand adventures to Main Scenario Quests, fans can expect plenty of new story content this fall – including some much-needed context for characters like Zoraal Ja, whose past and relationship with his father will finally be exposed. While young Gulool Ja settles into his role, it seems that Wuk Lamat is taking a back seat this time.
After all, she isn’t on the Crossorads album cover, instead on none other than the fan favorite Bakool Yes Yes surprisingly so. However, it is still unclear how he will fall into the patch. He’s not the most exciting character on the poster either: Prishe, a beloved figure from Square’s older MMO Final Fantasy 11, is next to him in the image. She will likely play a central role in Echoes of Vana’diel, the upcoming series of 24-man raids.
In addition to the first Echoes raid, Jeuno: The First Walk, an older Alliance Raid returns as part of a much more difficult level: Chaotic. The Cloud of Darkness, a boss from Final Fantasy 14’s introductory raid series, takes players into the game’s very first Chaotic battle. Director and producer Naoki ‘Yoshi-P’ Yoshida explains that while this new difficulty was intended to “have a kind of extreme feel to it,” it ended up being “a bit more of a wild one than an extreme one.”

Combined with the upcoming Unreal version of The Jade Stoa and the likely incredibly brutal Ultimate raid, Futures Unscribed, it sounds like there’s plenty of content to keep hardcore fans busy. However, there’s also a good chunk of normal content to look forward to: from the Yuweyawata Field Station dungeon to The Minstrel’s Ballad: Sphene’s Burden trial, patch 7.1 contains a ton of PvE activities to suit every player’s taste.
For fans of the MMO’s cozier elements like housing, big changes are in store. The ability to select interior designs from any residential area, regardless of plot location, is one of my personal 7.1 highlights and comes later in the line: new interior designs and the ability to make the inside of a house look like any different format. This means that the interior of my modest Lavender Beds cottage, while small, can look like that of a large property if I so choose.
To be fair to players with larger plots, changing the look of an interior won’t be cheap – but me and my gil are more than up for it. However, this is all just the tip of the patch 7.1 iceberg. The Living letter hits it all, from the more major content additions like raids to more minor things like Doman Mahjong updates. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to take a long nap until November.
You can’t keep Moo Deng to yourself, so Final Fantasy 14 players are swarming to the MMO’s Hippo Calf minion instead – and even Square Enix has caught the fever
