PlayStation Network has suddenly found itself in trouble due to a major global outage. It’s been a wild time to be a PlayStation fan right now, as fans recently reacted negatively to ads unexpectedly starting to appear in their PlayStation 5 titles. This also comes during a period of change for the brand, and it makes it that much more upsetting to discover that the PlayStation Network has gone down due to a major global outage. At the time of this publication, many PlayStation services are experiencing issues including account management, PlayStation Video, the PlayStation Store and more as of 8:21 PM CST on September 30.
According to PlayStation’s status update page: “You may be having trouble logging in or creating an account for PlayStation Network. We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. Thank you for your patience.” This applies to all platforms mentioned that still use the PlayStation Network, and extends to the other services and goes well beyond just logging in. It even goes so far as to have an effect on launching games, apps or other network functions. It also means that fans who want to purchase PlayStation Video content will not be able to do so or use the PlayStation Store.
When will PlayStation Network return?
At the time of this publication, there has yet to be a timetable showing when the PlayStation Network will be fully operational again. It has led to some hilarious reactions among fans who complain that the network is down when they have long shifts at work. It’s a relief for many fans after a hard day, and the fact that they can’t get online right now could mean, in some cases, a major barrier to enjoying themselves tonight. Fans are hilariously reacting with tearful memes and reaction videos, but it shows the magnitude of the lockdown.
This is all part of a wave of changes for the PlayStation brand that has rubbed fans the wrong way on many different occasions. The first came when it was announced that the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller had increased by five dollars to the new price of $69.99, after which some controllers were upgraded while others were not. Then, in the days and weeks that followed, these problems were exacerbated in other ways. So it seems like PlayStation Network going bankrupt is just another issue we can throw on the pile.
What’s going on with PlayStation?
Earlier this month, PlayStation 5 was updated with a new “Welcome Hub” and it was a new update to the console’s general dashboard. It was soon revealed that there were unwanted advertisements that had not been seen before, and some users even found themselves seeing these advertisements in the background when trying to select one of the titles to play. It’s one more issue on top of a fall season that has led to a lot of changes, and many of these changes are leading to bad reactions from fans. At the same time, PlayStation is also trying to celebrate its 30th anniversary.
With the release of new consoles and accessories with special decorations planned for the 30th anniversary, it has all been a roller coaster to be a fan of the company. It has been a step forward, and a step back, in many ways, both within and beyond their control.
