Ibrahima Konate was less than happy not to receive the Man of the Match award for his performance in Liverpool’s win over Wolves.
Konate opened the scoring at Molineux in the Reds’ 2-1 success, with Mohamed Salah scoring the all-important goal from the penalty spot.
Currently top of the Premier League after an impressive start, Arne Slot’s side are starting to find new equipment.
Defeat against Nottingham Forest feels so far away now, with the Merseysiders now having recorded four consecutive wins in all competitions.
Konate, who was relieved at the end of last season and replaced by Jarell Quansah, has recovered well.
Having registered three goals in as many games, the French defender was disappointed to hear how the Man of the Match award went Ryan Gravenberch’s way instead.
“Sky Sports, who decides who is the Man of the Match? How is this possible?!” he started.
‘He’s my brother, I have to give it to him. [But] Milan I score, today I score, I say what did I do to not deserve it?!
‘No, no, no, what happened? You know! You have to talk to them, I don’t know who decides that.”
When Konate was informed by a member of the Sky Sports team who had chosen Gravenberch, he said: “Gary Neville!”
Gravenberch smiled, “Thanks, Gary…”
“Maybe he forgot the moment we conceded a goal!” Slot responded when told about Konate’s reaction.
“Maybe that’s why we gave in, that he wasn’t there at the time, because I have to say it was at least avoidable.”
Liverpool’s team morale appears clearer than ever, with some perhaps suggesting everything could change following the departure of Jurgen Klopp.
Only Federico Chiesa arrived this summer as Liverpool tried to challenge bigwigs Manchester City and Arsenal.
“It’s almost ideal that we played against Wolves today because we are top and they are in last place and they definitely don’t deserve to be last,” Slot added.
“They had a very difficult schedule and I have seen many of their games and in almost every game they earn more.
‘You might even argue [that] today because it wasn’t like we were that much better than them.
“They were in the game [and] do a lot of good things. If they continue to do this against other teams, they will never become number 20 [in the league].
“We still have to prove that when we face Arsenal, Newcastle and Chelsea [and] Aston Villa [to see] if we can still be at the top, also with Champions League matches.
