Superior Health Foundation Gala donates $15,000 to UP nonprofit

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – The Superior Health Foundation hosted its annual gala to donate to an area nonprofit.

For 13 years, the Superior Health Foundation has partnered with a nonprofit organization for its annual gala. This year’s nonprofit partner was the Northern Lights Child Advocacy Center, a nonprofit organization that advocates for UP children who have experienced sexual or physical abuse or neglect.

Megan Murphy, CEO of the Superior Health Foundation, said the Northern Lights Child Advocacy Center received approximately $15,000 from this event.

“They are a newer nonprofit in our community, but they do serve all of UP, and they were chosen because they applied and submitted an application that really touched the hearts of our gala committee,” Murphy said.

Funds will be spent on modernizing the centre’s forensic interview room.

“Even beyond the funding, the confidence in us this shows from the Superior Health Foundation is humbling,” said Sarah Zyburt, executive director of the Northern Lights Child Advocacy Center. “They understand that for the children who experience abuse and neglect, it is a health issue, and if we can provide them with healing services now, they will not face adverse health risks when they grow up.”

This prevents children from having to tell their story multiple times.

“Noorderlicht opened our doors [in] September 2023 to meet the needs of the 1 in 6 children in our community who experience physical and sexual abuse, neglect and human trafficking,” said Zyburt. “We get to work with the most vulnerable children, and they are so strong. We are very lucky.”

In addition to presentations about the Northern Lights Child Advocacy Center and the Superior Health Foundation, guests spent the evening with food, silent auctions and a comedic hypnotist.

Zyburt says if you’re hurting, you’re not alone. For services, please call 906-262-0091 day or night.

Murphy thanks all sponsors, including presenting sponsor Marshfield Medical Center-Dickinson.
